JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

   

Florida Polytechnic University invites applications from highly qualified candidates for the Dr. Muhammad Harunur Rashid Chair of the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Cybersecurity Engineering, with an appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor in one of the disciplines within the department. The initial, renewable appointment as Chair is for 3 years; the initial faculty appointment may range from 3-6 years, depending on the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Both positions will begin on or before August 2025.

The Department of Electrical, Computer, and Cybersecurity Engineering delivers two ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degrees (Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering), a new Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity Engineering, four concentrations (Automotive, Energy, Machine Intelligence, Robotics), and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. The department plans to establish an NSA center for both hardware and software research and workforce development in partnership with industry partners. The Department and its programs are key to the strategic expansion of Florida Polytechnic University, which plans to grow enrollment by 40% over the next six years.

The objective of the Dr. Muhammad Harunur Rashid Chair is to advance the mission of Florida Polytechnic University by promoting excellence in teaching, research, creative discovery, and public service. The Dr. Muhammad Harunur Rashid Chair will propel the department and its programs to the next level of excellence. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leadership, with a focus on mentoring faculty to develop teaching excellence and sustainable research profiles. The successful candidate will provide evidence of academic program development and assessment, prior success in teaching, and a research profile appropriate for the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will become an active and visible member of the university community, interacting with students, faculty, staff, and industry partners.

   

JOB DESCRIPTION

   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cybersecurity Engineering, or closely-related field
  • Current or prior appointment as Associate Professor at a U.S. academic institution
  • Evidence of effective university-level teaching
  • Direct experience in:
    • ABET accreditation
    • Program assessment and execution of a continuous improvement plan
    • Course and curriculum development
    • Department-level policy creation
    • Mentoring faculty
  • Record of scholarship commensurate with experience in the profession
  • Participation in obtaining funding or work on funded projects
  • Service record commensurate with experience in the profession
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current or prior appointment as Professor at a U.S. academic institution
  • Experience as a Department Chair or Associate Department Chair
  • Funded research experience as a Principal Investigator.
  • Active participation in professional activities and organizations.
  • Direct experience in:
    • Online teaching and quality assurance
    • Experience with graduate teaching and research thesis supervision
    • Collaboration within and across academic departments

COMPENSATION: Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and rank.

Dr. Muhammad Rashid

Muhammad H. Rashid is the founding chair of Electrical, Computer, and Cybersecurity Engineering at Florida Polytechnic University.  Having earned a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Birmingham in the UK, Dr. Rashid has experience at the University of West Florida, University of Florida, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, University of Connecticut, Concordia University, Purdue University Calumet, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

Dr. Rashid remains actively involved in teaching and research in electronics, power electronics, and professional ethics.  He has published 29 books and more than 160 technical papers.  He is a fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET, UK) and a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).  He was elected an IEEE fellow with the citation, “Leadership in power electronics education and contributions to the analysis and design methodologies of solid-state power converters.”  Dr. Rashid is consistently listed among the top 2% of scientists globally, with recognition as a Top Scholar by ScholarGPS.

TENURE-EQUIVALENT SYSTEM

Faculty at Florida Poly are employed via renewable, multi-year appointments codified in a collective bargaining agreement.  This tenure-equivalent system substantially mirrors tenure systems at other schools, with reappointment and progression in rank based on a comprehensive review of accomplishments.  Initial contract durations are as follows:

                  Assistant Professor: 3 years

                  Associate Professor: 3-5 years

                  Professor:  6 years

Applicants with post-PhD experience may be offered an accelerated timeline to apply for promotion to the next academic rank. Under this tenure-equivalent system, faculty are eligible to compete for NSF and NIH grants, including career grants.
